Generator installations and backup power wiring

Run a generator the safe way, through a proper changeover switch, or get your inverter and solar wired in neatly.

Inverter and battery backup system installed in a Garsfontein home

Load shedding taught Pretoria a lot about backup power, including some bad habits. Extension leads through the window, generators back-fed through a plug point, inverters wired into the board without anyone checking what else was on that circuit. Those setups work right up until they do not, and a back-fed generator can put power onto a line someone else believes is dead.

We install generators with a changeover switch, so the house runs from either the municipal supply or the generator and never both at once. We also wire solar and inverter systems into the DB board, splitting off the essential circuits so the batteries run your lights, fridge and Wi-Fi and are not drained by the geyser.

What people call us about

  • Generator installations

Generators connected properly to the house or business, not through an extension lead.

  • Changeover switches

Changeover switches fitted so the generator and the mains supply can never meet.

  • Inverter and solar wiring

Inverters and solar systems wired into the board, with the essential circuits split off.

  • Backup that covers the wrong things

If the inverter runs the wrong circuits, we rearrange them so it covers what you actually need.

How we set up backup power

  1. 1

We ask what you want to keep running when the power goes. That decides which circuits go on backup.

  2. 2

We look at the DB board to see how it is laid out and whether there is space for a changeover switch or a separate essentials board.

  3. 3

You get a quote for the wiring and switchgear before any work starts.

  4. 4

After the installation we test the switchover with you, so you know exactly what to do the next time the lights go out.

Questions people ask

Can I plug my generator into a wall socket?

No. Back-feeding through a plug is dangerous for you and for anyone working on the lines. A changeover switch is the safe way to connect it.

Can you wire in an inverter I have already bought?

Phone us with the make and size, and we will look at how best to connect it to your board.

What should run on backup power?

Most people want the lights, the fridge, the TV and Wi-Fi, and the gate motor. The geyser, stove and kettle draw too much for most inverters.

Do you do this for businesses too?

Yes. We wire backup power for homes and for commercial properties.
