Burst pipes, burst geysers and leak detection
Water coming through the ceiling or bubbling up in the garden? Shut the main tap and phone us, day or night.
Water still pouring? Close the main tap at the meter, switch off the geyser breaker, then give us a call.
Call MartinWater damage spreads fast. A geyser that bursts in the roof can bring a ceiling down, and a split pipe under the paving can run unseen for days until the water bill arrives. The first job is always the same: stop the water, then find out where it came from.
We attend to burst pipes, burst and leaking geysers and geyser overflows at any hour. For leaks you cannot see, like a meter that keeps turning with every tap closed or a damp patch that keeps growing on a wall, we do leak detection to find the source before anybody starts breaking walls or paving open.
What people call us about
Burst geyser in the roof
Water through the ceiling. We isolate the geyser, drain it and repair or replace it.
Geyser overflow running
Water pouring from the pipe outside. It can be a valve, the pressure or the thermostat. We find which.
Burst pipe
In the wall, in the roof or underground. Isolated and repaired.
Hidden leak
The meter turns with every tap closed, or a damp patch will not dry. We track it down.
What to do right now
- 1
Turn off the water at the main stopcock, which is normally close to the water meter by the street. Turning it clockwise closes it.
- 2
If water is near light fittings or plug points, switch off the power at the main switch on the DB board.
- 3
For a burst geyser, switch its breaker off too. An element left on in an empty tank burns out.
- 4
Phone us. Then move furniture and anything valuable out of the way and put buckets where the water is coming through.
Questions people ask
How do I know if I have a hidden leak?
Turn off every tap and watch the water meter for a few minutes. If the numbers creep up, there is a leak somewhere. A damp wall, a soggy spot on the lawn that never dries or a sudden jump in the water bill are other signs.
My geyser overflow is dripping. Is that a problem?
A few drops while the geyser heats can be normal. A steady stream is not, and usually means a valve or the thermostat needs attention.
What if it happens on a Sunday or a public holiday?
Phone anyway. We work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and that includes public holidays.
The geyser burst and now the power keeps tripping. Is that connected?
It can be. Water in the ceiling can reach light fittings, and the element can short once the tank empties. We are electricians as well, so we check the circuits on the same call.
